Noepoli

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 974 · Postal code: 85035

In 1404 Noja was rewarded for having stayed neutral in the barons' revolt against the crown: it entered the royal demesne and fortified itself with a castle, which today is the town hall. That condition, which kept it outside the feudal regime, lasted until 1553, when it was sold to the Pignatelli.

The present name dates from 1863: Noepoli, new city in Greek. In the church of the Visitation there is a fifteenth-century font, and in the town a tombstone of the same century, which they call Iacuvill, shows a pilgrim asleep on a cushion; the Latin epitaph is almost entirely worn away. There are 974 residents.
