On 16 May Cersosimo, a municipality of 718 inhabitants in the province of Potenza, celebrates its patroness Our Lady of Constantinople.
On the coat of arms of Cersosimo there is an oak: cerza, in dialect, is the turkey oak, and this is how the town explained its own name to itself. The documents say otherwise. It comes from the Byzantine monastery of Santa Maria di Kyr Zosimo, «father Zosimos» in Greek, which appears in a parchment of 1043.
Earlier still, on the top of Monte Castello, stood the acropolis of a Lucanian town: Michele Lacava described its walls as an irregular heptagon of about 905 metres. Cersosimo is one of the five villages of the Sarmento valley, on the slopes of the Pollino. There are 718 residents.
