Sant'Angelo Le Fratte

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,457 · Postal code: 85050

From 1430 to 1818 the diocese of Satriano had its temporary seat here, and the mother church served as cathedral: nearly four centuries in which a small town housed a bishopric that was not its own. Inside there are two paintings attributed to Giovanni De Gregorio, the painter everyone calls il Pietrafesa.

Under the houses are the cellars, which open for four days running in mid-August; and there are still people here who work copper, one of the local trades. The Irpinia earthquake, in 1980, hit the town hard. There are 1,457 residents.
