Savoia di Lucania

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,148 · Postal code: 85050

The town was called Salvia. In 1878 one of its citizens, the anarchist cook Giovanni Passannante, attempted the life of Umberto I in Naples and failed; in 1879 the name was changed to Savoia di Lucania, as an act of reparation towards the dynasty. The inhabitants, though, still call themselves salviani.

Passannante was tortured for years and ended his days in an asylum. Since the two-thousands there have been two committees in the town: one wants to go back to Salvia, the other to keep Savoia. The old name, they say, comes from the sage that grows wild in the fields around, or from the Latin Saulia, place of willows. There are 1,148 residents.
