Satriano di Lucania

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,406 · Postal code: 85050

There are 410 murals on the walls of the town, counted in 2019. Satriano started painting itself all over and in 1988 was named the Italian capital of murals: they tell the history, the trades and the people of the place, and they have become the reason to stop here.

The town used to be called Pietrafesa, and Pietrafesa was also the nickname of the painter Giovanni De Gregorio, born here in the sixteenth century, who left canvases across half of Basilicata. In 1887 the comune took the name of Satriano, the ancient Lucanian town whose ruins lie a little further up. There are 2,406 residents.
