Sant'Arcangelo

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 6,506 · Postal code: 85037

The town was founded by the Lombards of the duchy of Benevento in the second half of the seventh century, and named after their patron, the archangel Michael. But the valley was lived in long before: below the hamlet of San Brancato, in the 1980s, some two hundred and twenty Lucanian burials came to light.

Outside the town stands the monastic complex of Santa Maria d'Orsoleo, which in 1305 set the bishop of Anglona against the local lord: the lord wanted to take it over and the bishop went to complain to the king. In the town itself you count fountains instead: Cifariell, Mederico, Parlante, del Cannone. There are 6,506 residents, split between the old part and San Brancato.
