Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Roccanova, a municipality of 1,644 inhabitants in the province of Potenza, celebrates its patron San Rocco, with tourists, emigrants and pilgrims from all over Italy.
In 1864 a Turin engineer named Telfi passed through Roccanova as a captain of bersaglieri, hunting brigands. He came back in 1882 to leave something of himself behind, and what he left was a sundial: he painted it in Piazza del Popolo, with the zodiac signs that mark the start of the seasons, and it still works.
Below the town the tuff is riddled with cave-cellars, where the big barrels of Grottino di Roccanova are kept; the wine is a DOP. The earthquake of 1857 was hard here: 85 dead and much of the old centre down. There are 1,644 residents.
