Missanello

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 548 · Postal code: 85010

That there was a castle at Missanello we know thanks to an Arab geographer. In 1154 al-Idrisi was compiling for king Roger II the description of the kingdom, and the castle went into it: it is the first time a document mentions it.

The town appears earlier still, in 968, in the Life of Saint Vitalis: the Basilian abbot «then passed to the mount of St Elias, called Missanello». The five lozenges of the coat of arms can already be seen on a silver processional cross of 1423. Today the maiatica olive covers more than 250 hectares, over a tenth of the territory. There are 548 residents.
