Feast of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel
📅 Every year, on 16 July
On 16 July Gallicchio, a municipality of 894 inhabitants in the province of Potenza, celebrates its patroness the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.
On the coat of arms of Gallicchio there is a cock holding an arrow in its right claw, in the act of throwing it. Some read the name that way, from the Latin Gallus ictus, the cock that throws; others draw it from the Greek, fine houses or other houses.
The old town, Gallicchio Vetere, was destroyed by the Saracens, and people went to shelter in the caves dug along the ditch they call dei Monaci. The name appears for the first time in a bull of 1060, which entrusts twelve monasteries to the bishop of Tricarico, among them the Monasterium Gallicclum. There are 894 residents.
