Sarconi

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,362 · Postal code: 85050

Sarconi is called the little Mesopotamia of the Val d'Agri, because it sits on a tongue of land between two rivers, the Maglia and the Sciaura. Water is what made its fortune: the Sarconi bean has IGP status and is sold outside Italy.

On the name there are two schools: those who draw it from the Latin sarculum, land to be worked, and those from the Greek sarkos, flesh, because the dead of a third-century BC battle between Romans and Carthaginians are said to be buried here. A Roman bridge on the via Herculea, not far off, is still called the bridge of Hannibal. There are 1,362 residents.
