Montemurro

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,312 · Postal code: 85053

The epicentre of the earthquake of 16 December 1857 was right here. Montemurro came down almost entirely, except in part the Concerie quarter, and the figures say the rest: there were 7,500 inhabitants that day, and four years later 3,655.

That quake shifted politics too: it put off the Lucanian insurrection by three years and forced the base to move to Corleto Perticara. It was led by a man from Montemurro, Giacinto Albini, who handed Garibaldi a Basilicata already freed. In 1907 a landslide carried away a piece of the upper town. There are 1,312 residents.

Montemurro celebrates co-patrons Saint George and Saint Maurice on 23 April and Saint Roch from 16 to 18 August; the town's name comes from the Castrum Montis Murri, destroyed by the 1343 earthquake, where today's Piazza Giacinto Albini now stands.
