Moliterno

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 4,182 · Postal code: 85047

The name is traced back to the Latin mulcternum, the place where milk was drawn and curdled: a town named after the trade that was carried on there. Canestrato di Moliterno was granted IGP status in 2010, and in the days of transhumance there were two kinds of it: the summer cheese, from pastures towards the sea, fattier, and the winter one, from the mountains, leaner but more fragrant.

Above the houses stands the castle, a Lombard core with a square keep added by the Normans, the Val d'Agri spread out below. In the palazzi of the old centre the Aiello family has opened six museums and a library. There are 4,182 residents.

Saint Dominic, patron of a town born from the destruction of Grumentum

📅 Every year, on 4 August

Moliterno celebrates Saint Dominic on 4 August: according to tradition, the town was founded by the people of Grumentum who escaped the massacre by the Saracens who destroyed ancient Grumentum between 872 and 975, gathering around a Lombard tower.
