Spinoso

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,555 · Postal code: 85039

The story they tell at Spinoso is this: the old village was called Carro Nuovo, and people left it because it was full of snakes, which according to the tale went as far as devouring children. Later some Jewish settlers arrived, worked out quickly why the place was empty, and moved to a knoll nearby that they called lo Spenuso.

From that name, and from the Latin spina with the suffix that means abundance, comes Spinoso: land full of thorns, as the catalogue of the barons records it. The town sits on the south shore of the Pietra del Pertusillo lake, and the years when the dam was being built were its good years, with work and new people. There are 1,555 residents.
