Argusto

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 529 · Postal code: 88060

Two explanations compete over the name, and they say the opposite of each other. The first has it from the Latin arbustum, a plantation of trees, land brought under cultivation; the second from the Greek argastos, meaning unworked, land left alone. There is also a third, which derives it from a Greek surname. The village stands at a little over five hundred metres on the eastern slope of the Serre, below Monte Pizzinni.

Outside the built-up area there is a bridge of the eleventh or twelfth century that everyone calls the bridge of Sofia, after a girl who is the heroine of a story told here since time out of mind. Of the monastery of Santa Maria della Sanità only ruins remain. In the village, instead, two palaces are worth looking at for one detail each: the wooden door of the Parisi house and the wrought-iron balcony of the Grassi house. The mother church is dedicated to Saint Hilary of Poitiers, who is also the patron.
