Feast of Saint Nicholas the Bishop
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Gagliato celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas the Bishop; the town is mentioned in a 1191 deed of donation to the Certosa di Santo Stefano del Bosco.
The Borgia took this fief by force: it was Goffredo, brother of Cesare and Lucrezia, who wrested it from the Morano with the help of a local tax farmer, one Gironda, and it took time before it returned to its lawful owners. Then it changed hands many times, and at each passage it changed rank: a marquisate under the Sanchez de Luna, a duchy when the same family bought it back, and at last a barony under the Castiglione Morelli. The oldest document, however, concerns the monks: on the fourteenth of November 1191 a farm in agro Galliati was given to the charterhouse of Santo Stefano del Bosco, and the grange that grew out of it came to administer the lands of five villages.
Below the village runs the Ancinale, which has had a larger history than its own. Pliny the Elder called it Caecinus and counted it among the navigable rivers of the gulf of Squillace; Thucydides tells that on its banks the Athenians captured three hundred Locrians. Today, after a dam was built upstream to feed a hydroelectric plant, almost nothing of that river is left: a reservoir and a network of channels. The village, meanwhile, has taken a turn nobody would expect, and the town council has proclaimed it the town of nanosciences, for the international meetings held there.
