Saint Theodore, patron of Satriano
📅 Every year, on 9 November
Satriano celebrates Saint Theodore on 9 November.
Satriano has 3,314 inhabitants divided between the shore and the hill, with chestnut woods above and olives further down. What we know about the old village comes mostly from a disaster: the earthquakes of 1783, which began in February and ended with the terrible shock of March. Giovanni Vivenzio, who wrote the report on them, noted that Satriano had cracked in the first tremors and collapsed in the last, many buildings down and the rest uninhabitable; and on the same page he listed what the area produced: victuals of every kind, oil, silk, cotton and chestnuts.
In the mother church there is a marble Saint Agatha of 1549, from the school of the Gagini, and in the village stands the tower of the Ravaschieri, the lords who governed here after the Gironda and before the Filangieri. But the monument that says most about the last century stands in the open, and it is the one dedicated to those who died at work abroad. In a place of this size that is not a rhetorical dedication: it is a way of writing down where the men went and what happened to some of them.
