Soverato

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 8,841 · Postal code: 88068

Soverato is three towns in one: the marina, the upper town and the remains of old Soverato, which the earthquake of 1783 destroyed. The name comes from the cork oak, which grew here in quantity. The old town had been born on the hill for a precise reason: between the ninth and the tenth century the Saracens were founding emirates along the coast, and the Byzantines issued an order that has gone down in history with the motto ascendant ad montes, let them go up to the mountains, which required coastal settlements to move inland.

In 1494 the king of Naples, Alfonso the Second, gave Soverato as a dowry to his daughter Sancia of Aragon, who was marrying Gioffre Borgia, son of pope Alexander the Sixth: the Borgias kept it for nearly a century. Before them and after them the town changed masters continually, between Angevins and Aragonese, with a spell as crown land.
