The old name was Daulis, and it comes from the Greek city of Daulia, from which in the seventh century BC came the colonists who founded the settlement; Daulia in turn comes from daulos, which in Greek means thick, covered with dense vegetation, like the woods that stood all around. Some have suggested that this was the kingdom of the Phaeacians, where the Odyssey has the shipwrecked Odysseus taken in. In the ninth century the territory filled with hermitages and monasteries of Basilian monks, one of them at the place called Trono.

On Good Friday they hold 'A Naca, which means the rocking: a procession going back to the seventeenth century, in which the statue of the dead Christ goes out accompanied by dozens of fir trees lit with coloured lanterns. Since 1938 there is also 'A Pigghjàta, the capture, the passion play divided into seven scenes. The earthquake of 1783 had emptied the town, which fell from three thousand inhabitants to little more than thirteen hundred; today the population has moved again, but downhill: about a thousand people live in the hill village, four thousand five hundred at the Marina.
