Feast of Saint Gregory the Wonderworker
📅 Every year, on 17 November
On 17 November Stalettì celebrates its patron Saint Gregory the Wonderworker with a traditional fair; the Abbazia di San Gregorio is dedicated to the saint.
The name most likely comes from the ancient Greek stalaktós, dripping. Somewhere in this territory stood the Vivarium, the monastery Cassiodorus founded and where books were copied: the ruins of a pentagonal Byzantine fortress at Santa Maria del Mare have often been taken for it, but they are not — Cassiodorus himself says so, describing the place in the Institutiones as lying at the foot of Monte Moscio, near the river Alessi and near the sea, and that description points to today's Coscia di Stalettì.
The convent of San Gregorio Taumaturgo is of the eleventh century and was a Basilian house before it became a Franciscan one; the relics of the patron lie under the high altar, and his feast, on the thirteenth of May, is called the feast of the miracle of the rain. Of the fifteenth-century mother church only ruins are left: the earthquake of 1783 brought it down, as it devastated much of the country around. Along the main street there are still the old lime kilns and the watchtower. The coat of arms is unusually crowded — a broken fluted column, a laurel branch, a crescent, a star and three hills rising out of the sea — with the name STALATIEN written in gold at its foot.
