The patron of Scilla is Saint Roch and his day falls on 16 August, the date the pilgrim saint keeps throughout Italy.
The statue leaves the church dedicated to him for the procession, in the town clinging to the rock where legend placed the monster of the Strait, and beneath which lies Chianalea, the fishermen's quarter whose houses end in the water.
