Saint Anthony of Padua and the tredicina fair
📅 Every year, on the Sunday following 13 June
Fabrizia celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua on the Sunday following 13 June, with a great fair through the town's streets from Saturday.
Fabrizia has a birth certificate and the name of its founder. It was built between 1590 and 1591 by Fabrizio Carafa, prince of Roccella, who set his summer residence here and gave the place his own name. The site, then called li prunari, was chosen for practical reasons: woods, pasture and mineral resources worked since antiquity. At its foundation the settlement counted forty-seven hearths; in the census of 1643 there were already a hundred and eighteen, with two priests and the prince's palace. It was no isolated case: in those same years hunger and Saracen raids were reshuffling the population of the Ionian side, and several new villages were born together.
The tax survey of 1746 lists the trades practised here: blacksmiths, tailors, carpenters, masons, cheesemakers, butchers, farmers and labourers, and among them also a snow keeper, that is the man who guarded the snow stored away for the summer. Along the Allaro torrent there were mills for grinding and kilns for clay. Fabrizia is the only village of the Serre from which the Ionian sea can be seen, and the Allaro itself rises in its territory: one of its springs is called Gurna Nigra, the black pool.
