Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Mongiana, a municipality of 796 inhabitants in the province of Vibo Valentia, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
The village was born on 8 March 1771 to give the workers somewhere to sleep: the Bourbons had put here, in the woods of the Serre, the royal ironworks and the arms factory, and up to two thousand eight hundred people worked in them, craftsmen, clerks, managers and soldiers.
From these forges came the rails of the Naples to Portici line, the first railway in Italy, the iron of the first suspension bridge in Italy, the Real Ferdinando over the Garigliano, and a rifle actually called the Mongiana. Ferdinand II came to see it in October 1852; in 1881 everything closed. Today what is left of the works is a museum, and in 2024 Eugenio Bennato wrote a song about it.
