Feast of Saint Philip Neri
📅 Every year, on 26 May
On 26 May Candida, a municipality of 1,152 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, celebrates its patron Saint Philip Neri.
The name comes from the white rocks on which the old part of the village stands: locus candidus. A document of 1576 calls it «in a high place and of good air», three miles from Avellino, and the historian Zigarelli wrote that from its slopes twelve villages can be seen, forming a crown around it.
The Catalogus Baronum, drawn up for Roger II between 1150 and 1168, gives Candida as a fief of two knights, in the hands of a Norman, Alduino, who then lost it after a quarrel with the chancellor. In 1420 Caterina Filangieri brought it as her dowry when she married Sergianni Caracciolo. And in 1440 Alfonso of Aragon signed a letter «from our happy camps against the land of Candida».
