Chiusano di San Domenico

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 2,351 · Postal code: 83040

Chiusano di San Domenico stands at seven hundred and fifty metres, on the western slope of Monte Tuoro, and human presence here is documented as early as Roman times by coins, pottery and tombs. In the eleventh century, under the Lombards, the life of the village turned on a castle built on the neighbouring Monte Domenico. Of its religious buildings there survive the hermitage of Santa Maria della Valle, which goes back to 1230, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli of 1710, and the confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament of the Rosary, founded two years later.

There is then a chapter the village shares with other municipalities of the Campanian interior. Between 1940 and 1943 Chiusano was one of the places designated by the fascist authorities to receive Jewish refugees in civil internment: a form of confinement that involved no camps, but the official assignment of the internees to a small village far from strategic areas, where they lived under surveillance and had to report regularly. They were freed in September 1943, with the arrival of the Allied army.
