Montefalcione

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 3,442 · Postal code: 83030

Montefalcione has 3,442 inhabitants on a hill of Irpinia, and on its coat of arms it has a falcione, the billhook, above three mountains: they are the three heights of the district, that of the Castle, that of San Marco and that of Santa Marina, and the blade is not a weapon but the sign of peasant labour. The name changed its skin with every domination: Montefalsone for the Lombards, Montefalzone for the Normans, Montefaucione for the Angevins.

In 1902 two Etruscan tombs came to light with a copper coin and a lachrymatory vase; in the first years after the unification of Italy the village was instead the scene of a revolt against the new government and of the bloody repression that the troops of the royal army made follow it. In the last week of August the celebrations for Saint Anthony are held, and at every procession the auction of the saints takes place: whoever offers most carries the statue on their shoulders for their stretch of road, and the money goes to the committee that will organise next year's feast.
