Salza Irpina

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 767 · Postal code: 83050

The name comes from salt: from the Latin salsa, salty, because of a sodic spring that the Romans worked to get salt from and that here they call the tre cannuoli, the three spouts. The coat of arms speaks Latin too: the letters S and A stand for Salsula Abellinensis, because the village once belonged to the territory of Avellino.

The red of the shield is said to come instead from the Boerio, who were marquises of Salza from 1760 to 1806, that is until feudal rights were abolished; the chestnut leaf recalls what grows in the valley of the Salzola torrent, and indeed the village fairs are those of the chestnut and of the porcino mushroom. At the beginning of the twentieth century, though, most people here had another trade: they were shoemakers. Today not one is left.
