Montaguto

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 451 · Postal code: 83030

Montaguto is a village of water: the springs are many and so are the fountains. The Fontana vecchia carries an inscription dating its rebuilding to 1539. The Fontana preziosa, the precious one, is named after a princess of Cariati who found that water so good that she had seven barrels of it carted to Naples every week. And the Fontana paolina takes its name from a local shepherd, a gruff man.

Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the village housed a sizeable Waldensian community. Then epidemics and earthquakes reduced it almost to nothing: in 1660 the hearths, that is the families liable to tax, were three. Recovery came in the eighteenth century. In our own time, between 2006 and 2011, an enormous earthflow came down onto the valley floor and closed both the trunk road to Apulia and the railway for years.
