Feast of Saint Anne
📅 Every year, on 26 July
On 26 July Savignano Irpino, a municipality of 1,163 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, celebrates its patroness Saint Anne (sant'Anna).
Three times the village has written its double belonging into its own name. Until 1862 it was plain Savignano; then «di Puglia» was added, to tell it from the villages of the same name in Romagna and Emilia, just when it had passed to the province of Avellino; and in 1963 that «di Puglia» became «Irpino». In 2006 there was a vote to go back to Apulia, but the referendum did not reach its quorum.
The town hall is palazzo Orsini, which pope Benedict XIII had built in the eighteenth century as a hospice for pilgrims. Of the Norman castle the walls are left, and inside there is a conference centre. On the plateau of the Ferrara, where a session of the assizes of Ariano was held in 1142, of a great medieval castle only the name of a hill remains.
