Panni

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 858 · Postal code: 71020

Panni stands on the summit of Monte Sario, at 801 metres, and in summer people come up here for the cool air. The name, tradition says, comes from the god Pan, who indeed appears on the village's banner; others trace it to Panda, a Samnite deity of the harvest, or to the Latin pandus, curved. Something of that tradition survives in music too: this is bagpipe country, and the village band keeps the practice alive.

On the outer wall of the bell tower of the mother church there are graffiti of early Christian date, and others inside from the time of the Templars. In the upper part of the village, along the walk they call the Castle, one wall still stands of the watchtower built by the Spanish at the beginning of the sixteenth century, with a small window cut into it. And on the doorways of the houses are the carved keystones of the local stonecutters, a craft handed down for centuries.
