Bovino

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,562 · Postal code: 71023

The name has nothing to do with oxen: it comes from the Latin Vibinum, and in the thirteen hundreds the town was called Bivino. The root vib- is the same as in Vibo Valentia, but what it meant nobody knows. Here, two hundred and seventeen years before Christ, Hannibal camped before going on to Cannae.

In 1265 the Virgin is said to have appeared to a young carpenter named Niccolò, and the year after they began the sanctuary of Valleverde. Under the town are the Cerrato cellars, two rooms of a Roman cistern, and the church of San Pietro stands where a temple of Hercules once was. After the unification of Italy, Bovino was occupied by the bands of Carmine Crocco.
