Monteleone di Puglia

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 1,067 · Postal code: 71020

At 842 metres Monteleone is the highest municipality in Apulia, looking out over the upper valley of the Cervaro. The «di Puglia» in its name is older than the region as we know it: it served to tell the village from other Monteleones, and the Apulia it referred to was the Norman duchy of Apulia and Calabria. In the centuries of religious conflict the village took in many of the persecuted, Waldensians above all.

On 23 August 1942 Monteleone rose against the rules cutting the quotas of wheat that could be taken to the mill: public buildings were stormed and set on fire, and the news was reported with great prominence by Radio London. It was one of the first episodes of open anti-fascism in Italy, and the reprisal came as a house-by-house sweep. Thirteen years earlier, in 1929, a decree had detached the municipality from the province of Avellino and given it to that of Foggia.
