Feast of Saint Leonard the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 6 November
On 6 November Baselice celebrates its patron Saint Leonard the Abbot, to whom the town's main church is dedicated.
Everything the village claims about its own antiquity rests on a single stone: a solemn inscription found here, which Mommsen, however, held to be false. On that stone rest both the derivation of the name from a basilica attributed to Septimius Severus and the idea that at the district of Porcara stood Murgantia, the Samnite city Livy calls a valida urbs, stormed by the consul Publius Decius Mus in 296 BC. The other explanations do without the stone: the Byzantine Basilici, from the laws of Leo VI that also gave Basilicata its name, or the Lombard Basilicus, the title of whoever carried the sovereign's orders.
The ground here is clay and it moves: in 1727 a landslide buried the village almost entirely. Shortly before, Baselice had grown by taking in the people of Porcara and Monte Saraceno, two villages by then destroyed. Its province kept changing too: until 1811 it belonged to the Capitanata, then it passed to Molise, where it was declared the head of a circondario, and only in 1861 did it end up in the province of Benevento.
