On 17 January, when the big bell strikes noon, the Devil comes out into the streets of Tufara: a man sewn into seven goatskins, held on chains the Folletti forged for him. Ahead of him goes Death, dressed in white, face floured, with scythes and a goat. At the end a straw puppet is put on trial and condemned.

The village, 978 residents, stands on a tufa crag with the Lombard castle above the houses. Giovanni Eremita came from here, reckoned the first saint of Molise: in the courtyard of his house there is a well whose water is held to be miraculous, and with that water they make the panelle eaten on the three days of his feast, in November.
