San Martino Sannita

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 1,277 · Postal code: 82010

Until 1873 the village was called San Martino Ave Gratia Plena, and people shortened it to San Martino A.G.P.; after the unification of Italy it became San Martino Sannita. The name comes from a ninth-century church, San Martino in Cucciano, and Cucciano from the fundus Cocceianus, the farm of some Cocceius: the same name that in the Caudine valley gave Bucciano.

It is a tiny comune, six square kilometres, but inside it there are six villages, San Martino, Cucciano, Lentace, Mancusi, San Giacomo and Terranova, and each has its own church. Between the lowest point and the highest there are four hundred metres, enough for the upper ground to be free of summer mugginess and the lower ground of winter cold. On the eleventh of November the statue of Martin on horseback, cutting his cloak, comes out.
