San Nicola Manfredi has 3,624 inhabitants south-east of Benevento, scattered among several villages: Monterocchetta, Santa Maria a Toro, Santa Maria Ingrisone, Toccanisi and Pagliara. This last is an exclave: it lies detached from the rest of the comune, at three hundred and sixty-five metres, on the slope that looks over the valley of the Sabato and dominates what was the papal territory of Benevento.
Pagliara is certainly recorded from 956, when a document lists among the churches of the monastery of San Modesto the ecclesiam San Damiani de loco Palearie; in 1320 the hamlet appears among those of Montefusco, taxed in ounces and tarì. The families of the village were originally forty, twenty-six in the sixteenth century, thirty-eight in the mid-seventeenth: then the plague of 1656 decimated them. Some have wanted to read in Palearie the name of Pallas, imagining a temple at the origin of the village, but it is only a scholars' conjecture.
