Saint Michael the Archangel, patron of Sant'Angelo a Cupolo
📅 Every year, on 8 May
Sant'Angelo a Cupolo celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel on 8 May, in the church dedicated to him.
The town stands on a hill on the right bank of the Sabato, some ten kilometres from Benevento, and for centuries it was the pope's ground in the middle of the kingdom of Naples: since ancient times it belonged to the papal dominion of Benevento. More than one of its hamlets, however, was long disputed by the barons of Montefusco and the kings of Naples, and not without bloodshed. Only one, Pastene, was truly granted as a fief, to a Luigi Memmoli in 1633, and then passed to the Capasso of Benevento. The coat of arms, granted in 1958, holds together the landscape and the name: an azure field, two green mountains and the archangel Michael in flight above them.
The largest monument is the convent of the Liguorini, built in 1775 on a panoramic hill: begun as a novitiate and house of studies, it was later turned into a home for the elderly, and the façade was enlarged in 1925; inside is the chapel of Sant'Alfonso. The mother church of Saints Angelo and Leonardo dates from 1754 and keeps a sixteenth-century statue of Saint Michael, two frescoes — the one to the left of the high altar is by Liborius Pizzella — and a canvas of the Madonna del Latte; near the cemetery, instead, stands the chapel of San Michele. From Roman times remain the vestiges of an aqueduct and some inscribed stones, gathered in the nineteenth century by Theodor Mommsen and Raffaele Garrucci. The hamlet of Montorsi had its own station on the Benevento to Avellino railway.
