Santa Croce del Sannio

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 985 · Postal code: 82020

A village of not even a thousand people has a historical institute of its own: the town council founded it in 1981 and it carries the name of Giuseppe Maria Galanti, the eighteenth-century historian born here. It has published a dozen books, from the culture of transhumance to the old trades, and the town library holds more than four thousand volumes.

The other distinguished son is Girolamo Vitelli, the philologist, and the library bears his name. Until 1883 the village was called Santa Croce di Morcone; then it took the Sannio. The tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela crosses its territory, and the railway station named after the village stands in the comune of Morcone.
