In the 1950s, for an inquiry into living conditions in the south, they filmed Altilia: inside the Roman town of Saepinum, still standing, shepherds lived in houses made out of the theatre walls, and the flocks still went down the main street.

Saepinum was a station on the Pescasseroli-Candela drove road, ringed by twenty-five round towers; on the Bojano gate are two carved German prisoners and the inscription of Tiberius and Drusus. The name Altilia comes from the Arabic al tell, town in ruins, as they found it once it was abandoned. Today's town, higher up, was born then: the 1,985 residents live at 698 metres, on the Matese.
