Sassinoro

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 659 · Postal code: 82026

Sassinoro stands at 545 metres on a hill on the slopes of Monte Rotondo, and it is the last piece of Campania before Molise: it borders Morcone along three quarters of its perimeter and Sepino, which is already in the province of Campobasso. It used to belong to the County of Molise, and only since 1861 has it been in the province of Benevento. The name, tradition says, comes from a stone on which pope Honorius III rested; more probably it comes from the Saxons, the Germanic people who came down into Italy in the wake of the Lombards. In 1027 the village is recorded as Sassannorum.

Its wealth is water: on the northern side of Monte Rotondo there are thirteen springs, all above eight hundred metres, and across the territory some fifteen fountains, with drinking troughs in every quarter and a great fountain in the square; the village supplies itself, and those waters once turned a good many mills. Snow, by contrast, is memory: the fall of 1903 and above all that of 24 February 1956, when the village was cut off and the army had to be called in; the last great one was in February 2012. In the oak woods stands the sanctuary of Santa Lucia, born of a legend: some shepherds in the seventeenth century saw the saint and Saint Michael appear in a cave, and going back a few days later found the two figures impressed on the rock.
