Cercemaggiore

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 3,927 · Postal code: 86012

In 1861 Cercemaggiore was taken from Molise and put into the new province of Benevento, in Campania. It took sixty-six years of political battles to get back: it is the only one of the Molise comuni detached then that recovered its province, in 1927.

The name comes from the cerro, the Turkey oak, the tree that is also on the arms. Above the town stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Libera, with the wooden statue of the Madonna of 1412; the baronial palace is the old Lombard castle, which don Diomede Carafa turned into a residence in the sixteenth century. On the mountain, the church of Santa Maria al Monte is twelfth-century. The 3,927 residents live south-east of Campobasso.
