Casapulla

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 8,180 · Postal code: 81020

In 1714, inside the Stellato family chapel, the police arrested the lawyer Francesco Stellato. It did not end well for the officers: the church excommunicated them all, because they had violated the immunity of a sacred place. The chapel, dedicated to the Madonna of Constantinople, still stands beside the palace.

On the square there is a wrought-iron clock that Fabritius Buonpane built in 1787 to give the hour to the farmhands. The village name is said to come from Casa Apollonis, after a temple of Apollo that stood hereabouts. On 1 January 1931 the fascist regime erased Casapulla along with Curti and San Prisco, folding them into Santa Maria Capua Vetere: they became municipalities again on 1 January 1947.
