Feast of Saint Roch and Saint Michael
📅 Every year, on 14 and 15 September
On 14 and 15 September Curti celebrates its patrons Saint Roch and Saint Michael; the village is home to the church of San Michele Arcangelo.
On the ancient Appian Way, in the territory of Curti, stands the Conocchia: a Roman mausoleum of the second century with eleven niches for the urns, so called because it resembles a spinner's distaff. Tradition holds that Flavia Domitilla is buried there too, niece of Vespasian, persecuted by Domitian because she was a Christian.
The village name, on the other hand, comes from the Lombards: when they took Capua they settled in a separate portion of the city and set their court there, as they did in Milan with the Cordusio and in Verona with the Cortalta. Out of that quarter Curti was born. Nineteenth-century excavations turned up a hundred and fifty tufa statues of Matres, mothers holding up to twelve newborns in their arms: a collection unique in the world.
