Portico di Caserta

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 7,719 · Postal code: 81050

From 1 January 1929 Portico di Caserta did not exist: the regime merged it with Macerata Campania into a new municipality, named Casalba after an old hamlet, with the town hall at Macerata and the whole thing moved into the province of Naples. The two villages took their names back on 30 June 1946, inside the newly created province of Caserta.

The name perhaps comes from a Roman porticus, maybe that of a villa at Musicile, beneath which the settlement is said to have grown. The parish church of San Pietro already appears in the tithe list of 1137; the present one was rebuilt in the seventeenth century, widened into a Latin cross between 1864 and 1875, and holds the four Evangelists painted in 1874.
