Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Ciorlano celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari; the municipal territory lies within the Parco Nazionale del Matese.
In medieval documents the village is called Zurlanum, later softened into Zurlano. It stands at the far north of the province, on the border with Molise, and it is the municipality of the Caserta area with the fewest inhabitants of all. In its arms a wolf stands on a three-peaked mountain, with a sun and a dove above.
In the twelfth century it was the fief of a Norman family, then it passed to the Sanframondo and in 1407 to the crown. It was in that year that the quarrels began with the neighbouring communes over where one territory ended and the next began: the matter was settled only in 1810, by the feudal commission, four centuries later. Ciorlano reached Campania late: until 1945 it was in the province of Campobasso.
