Feast of San Giovanni Battista
📅 Every year, on 29 August
On 29 August Letino, a municipality of 715 inhabitants in the province of Caserta, celebrates its patron San Giovanni Battista.
The year 1877 gave Letino a place in the history books: the Matese band, a group of anarchists, came up here and together with the local people proclaimed the anarchist social republic, raising the red and black flag over the town hall. It is the first documented time anywhere in the world that this flag was hoisted over a municipality. The anarchists were arrested and held for a long time; tried for an earlier clash in which a carabiniere had died, they were acquitted.
Above the village stands the castle, founded in the eleventh century to watch over the upper Matese, with an irregular circuit of walls and five round towers: in the seventeenth century, inside those walls, the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Castello was built, swallowing two of the towers, and today the rest of the space inside the circuit is taken up by the cemetery. In the Cauto caves, near the lake, live insects and crustaceans with white shells and no eyes. Between 1927 and 1945, when the province of Caserta was abolished, Letino belonged to that of Campobasso.
