Feast of Saint Anthony
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Gallo Matese, a municipality of 648 inhabitants in the province of Caserta, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony.
Gallo Matese stands on a hill in a closed valley of the Matese, on the Molise border, and its people have an unusual origin: around the year six hundred, as the Cassinese Chronicles record, Romualdo, duke of Benevento, took in on his father Grimoald's orders a group of Bulgars who had come from Asia, and those people merged with the local Samnites. The name has changed more than once: in 1154 the village was called Gualdum, probably from the German wald, wood, and around 1620 a document from Montecassino calls it Lo Gallo. As a fief it owed twelve soldiers and twelve servants in time of war, and it supplied them for the first crusade.
This is where the Matese band ended. On 8 April 1877 the anarchists led by Carlo Cafiero and Errico Malatesta, having occupied Letino, reached Gallo at about two in the afternoon: Malatesta shot open the lock of the town hall and they burned all the official paper of the comune — land registers, tax files, mortgage deeds — to show the abolition of the State and of private property. Leaving the village they found themselves surrounded, bad weather did the rest, and on 12 April the bersaglieri caught them in a farmhouse above Letino without any resistance. One more turn, administrative this time: on 2 January 1927, when the province of Caserta was abolished, Gallo Matese passed to that of Campobasso, and stayed there until 11 June 1945.
