Fontegreca

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 849 · Postal code: 81014

The village used to be called Fossaceca. In 1862 the town council decided to change its name and built one out of two pieces: Fonte, from a spring of very cold water, and greca, taken from old manuscripts in which the place was called Fossa Graeca. Since then it is Fontegreca, but in dialect people still say Fossacèca.

In 1927, when the province of Caserta was abolished, Fontegreca ended up in the province of Campobasso, in Molise, and stayed there until 1945. In between came the war: the Germans had their command post in Palazzo Parrillo, the people fled up to the mountains of Gallo Matese, and the Americans entered the village on 1 November 1943, after days of shelling.
