The cemetery of Grazzanise is not in Grazzanise. In 1907 the hamlet of Santa Maria la Fossa broke away and became a municipality of its own, but the graveyard ended up inside the new boundaries: ever since, it has been a small exclave of the old municipality within the territory of the new one. The village appears for the first time in a bull of Frederick the Second of 1234, under the name Graczanum.

On the coat of arms are the three Graces, Euphrosyne, Thalia and Aglaia, because an old explanation derives the name from island of the Graces. The plain around, that of the Mazzoni, on the left bank of the Volturno, was marsh and malaria for centuries; once drained, it became buffalo country, and from here comes the buffalo mozzarella of Campania.
