San Cipriano d'Aversa

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 13,416 · Postal code: 81036

For eighteen years this comune did not exist under this name. In 1928 San Cipriano was merged with Casal di Principe into a new comune called Albanova, of which Casapesenna was also part, being then one of its hamlets; in 1946 Albanova was dissolved and San Cipriano took back its autonomy, but the story did not end there, because in 1973 Casapesenna too broke away and became a comune of its own. Out of the whole business the territory came smaller than it had gone in. The name comes from the patron saint, San Cipriano, and the specification «d'Aversa» serves to tell it apart from the others of the same name; the town, first mentioned in the twelfth century, was indeed a hamlet of Aversa.

Here the vine does not stand on a wire but on a tree. In Angevin times Louis Pierrefeu, cellarer to Robert of Anjou, chose the soil of the Aversa country to plant the vines that were to keep the court supplied with sparkling wine: the shoots, leaning on poplars, grow upwards and in festoons, and give bunches of small greenish grapes, slightly sharp in taste — hence the name uva asprinia. The system has a practical advantage as well, because it leaves the ground below free for low crops. The Asprinio is today a DOC wine, straw-coloured with green reflections, to be drunk cool. The speech is peculiar too: the casalese dialect often replaces A with E.
