Lusciano

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 14,539 · Postal code: 81030

Fascism cut this comune in two, and when the regime fell only one half came back. Before, it was called Lusciano e Ducenta; in 1929 Lusciano was downgraded to a hamlet of Aversa and Ducenta was attached to Trentola. In 1946 Lusciano detached itself from Aversa again and became autonomous, but Ducenta stayed where it had been put: that comune is called Trentola Ducenta and it still exists. The name too took centuries to reach its present form: in the fifth century people said Rusiano or Rosciano, between the eighth and the tenth Ruczano and Rizzano, and only from the thirteenth century onwards, in the vernacular, Luxanis and hence Lusciano.

The ducal palace bears over its entrance the arms of the Donnorso, which are a bear, as the name requires. The building grew up around a small tower between Largo Torre and strada Torre; the tower was pulled down in 1983 and today only a cone-shaped stump of it remains. The oldest reference to the palace is in a deed of sale of 1632, and a second deed, of 1668, records the passing of the fief from Filippo Lucarelli to Francesco Mollo; in 1819 Giovanni Francesco Mollo left the duchy of Lusciano to countess Maddalena Donnorso. Today the palace hosts the sittings of the town council, plays and film screenings. The fields around give peaches, strawberries and the grapes of the asprinio.
